Ways To Identify A Font From An Image In Canva

1. Study the text

One of the easiest ways to figure out a font used in Canva is to study it. If it looks different from the rest, then it means that the designer picked a special font.

You should also check if the person left any notes or details with the design. Peeking at the document properties might reveal which font they used. This way, you can find the specific font chosen for the text in Canva.

2. Check Canva Font Library

Canva already has a library that houses different kinds of fonts. If you’re trying to find a font used in an image, you can go to the library and look through all the fonts.

Thankfully, all the fonts appear in their distinct style, making it easier for you to identify the font when you see it.

All you need to do is to manually compare the fonts in the library to the one you want to figure out. If you pay more attention, you’ll likely find the font you want.

3. Use Manual Identification

Another way to manually identify fonts on Canva is to use websites like Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts, or MyFonts.

Place the design side-by-side with the font library and take note of similar characteristics such as letter shapes, spacing, and style.

I’ll give you a step-by-step detail below:

a. Look at the design and take note of the font characteristics

This is the first step. You have to look closely at the fonts used in the design that you’re trying to replicate.

Start by noting the specific characteristics that stand out like the shape of the letters, the space between characters, and the overall style.

b. Visit the font libraries

When you have figured out the font’s unique features, you can then visit libraries like Google Fonts or Adobe Fonts. They contain a wide variety of fonts worth exploring.

Don’t forget to open a new tab or window with the design containing the unidentified font and have it side-by-side with the font library.

This will help you to easily compare the similarities as you look through the font library.

c. Browse similar fonts

Now that you have figured out the unique features of the unidentified font that you’re curious about, you should search for these features in the library.

Let’s say your font has rounded edges. You can type “Rounded” into Adobe Font or Google Font’s search bar. It will pull out different kinds of fonts in the same category.

Look through these fonts and narrow down your options until you find the font that best matches the one you want to identify. Then, check for the font details, including the name and designer.

With that done, check to see if the font is available on Canva.

4. Canva Community Assistance

For a platform as large as Canva, it’s great that there’s a user community that everyone can leverage. The group has been around since 2016 and serves as the ultimate hub and gathering place for users to chat about all things Canva and design-related.

If you have a Facebook account, you can easily join the group. You’ll meet other users, both established and beginner designers, who will help you unveil the font you’re looking for.

When you join the group, you can describe the font in words or better still, share a picture of the design that has the font. You can say something like, “Hello everyone! I’m trying to find out the name of this font and if it’s available on Canva. It looks like this *(describe or show the font). Any ideas?

If you’re lucky, you might receive responses from other users who have come across the same font or something similar before. Some of them might also be better at typography and will help you figure out the font you’re looking for.

Don’t forget to thank them for their help once you receive helpful suggestions. If you have enough time on your hands, you might want to check the group’s previous messages to see if someone else has had a similar question before.

Aside from the Canva design community, you can leverage other forums like Quora and Reddit to get help with identifying fonts. You can also join design groups on Facebook and LinkedIn.

These groups are filled with people who know a lot about fonts and there’s no easier way to tap into their knowledge than by asking questions. You can either describe the font you’re looking for or just attach a picture.

You might be lucky to find someone who has used the font before and can help you with the name.

6. Use Online Font Identifier Tools

This is one of the best ways you can identify a font on Canva. It saves you a lot of headaches and trial and error.

Some of the tools I use are WhatTheFont and Font Squirrel Matcherator. They are both handy tools and are available for free online.

So, if you have an image with text and you’re desirous of using the same font in your own Canva designs, first take a screenshot of the design. Then, crop it such that the text is isolated from the other design elements.

Go to WhatTheFont’s website or Font Squirrel Matcherator and upload your image there. These tools are like font detectives and will analyze your image until they figure out the font used or even suggest similar ones.

From my use so far, I have noticed that these tools are convenient. You won’t stress over the guesswork that comes with font identification.

The most exciting part is that you can use these tools from anywhere and with any smart device. As long as you have a stable internet connection, you’re good to go.

That said, let’s look at the different third-party font identifier tools that can be of great use when you’re looking for a font on Canva.

Font Identifier Tools To Find Fonts From An Image In Canva

It would have made a lot of sense if Canva had a built-in identifier tool where you could easily upload an external image and locate the font used.

However, in the absence of that, other awesome tools can help you do the job. In fact, I have listed a few of them below.

Take a look.

1. WhatTheFont By MyFonts

This is one of the most popular tools for identifying fonts from an image. Because it’s AI-powered, it goes as far as helping you figure out the name of the font.

I discovered that it uses deep learning to look through many font styles to find the one that matches the text in your picture. And truly, it doesn’t matter how fancy or stylish the font is, it will dig it out.

The interface is easy to navigate. There’s a search bar that allows you to either paste your image URL or simply upload a picture where the text appears. However, the image must be less than 5 MB.

Once that is done, the tool gets to work and automatically finds the font style you’re looking for. If you want more precise findings, you can draw a box around the text.

Aside from telling you the font’s name, WhatTheFont goes the extra mile to suggest similar fonts that can also work for you. Best of all, there’s a mobile app that allows for easier and quicker use.

You can download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple Store. Once you have the app on your phone, you can easily point your camera at the text and it will find the font for you.

2. Font Squirrel Matcherator

Though Font Squirrel is mainly known for providing high-quality fonts, it comes with a useful tool called “Font Identifier” which helps you find similar fonts that complement the ones you have on your Canva picture.

So, instead of telling you the specific font in the image, it highlights fonts that share similar features to the one you’re looking to identify. All you need to do is upload the Canva image, indicate the text you wish to match, and it gets to work.

You can also provide the image URL or more details about the font style that you’re looking for. This tool is quite helpful especially if you want to discover new fonts that align with the visual style you have in mind for your design needs.

3. Identifont

From the name alone, you can easily tell that this is a font identification tool. However, it has a peculiar feature that sets it apart from other similar tools.

Unlike the rest that analyze images, Identifont requires you to answer a series of questions to pinpoint the distinctive traits of the font you’re trying to find.

I find this process quite intriguing because you get to answer queries on different areas like the shape of specific letters, the presence of serifs, and other distinguishing features of a font style.

As you respond to these questions, the tool refines its search and ultimately gives you accurate font suggestions. Even though you don’t find the exact font you’re looking for, you will find something that’s a bit similar.

You should go for this tool if you don’t have an image of the font but already have specific details of the font in mind. A little interaction with Identifont will pull out potential font matches.

4. What Font Is

What Font Is is an interesting font finder tool and one of my favorites. Although there’s no mobile app available, you can easily access it from your web browser.

Once you come across a Canva image and are curious to find the font used in designing it, all you need to do is upload the image or simply provide a valid URL. After that, you can crop and optimize it for better and cleaner results.

If you use low-quality images with distorted text, you may not get accurate font identification. After the image is processed, the tool pulls out more than 60 fonts that are similar to the one you’re searching for.

The best part is that each suggestion comes with links to pages where you can easily download or purchase the fonts.

Ultimately, this tool is not just for designers who are looking for a specific font but also for people who stumble on different fonts and want to know more about them.

Conclusion

The best way to identify a font from an image in Canva is to get in touch with the designer. That’s the surest way to get an accurate answer.

However, if you’re unable to reach the creator, you can always use third-party font finder tools like What Font Is, Identifont, and WhatTheFont to find your desired font.

You can also seek assistance from the Canva community or online forums like Quora or Reddit.
